Twitter to Launch Photo-Sharing Apps
A rumor started by TechCrunch leaked the plan of Twitter to launch its own photo-sharing applications. However, the social networking site never commented on the story. At the recent D9 conference, which was organized by All Thing D in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, it was said that Twitter CEO Dick Costolo was set to speak this Wednesday possibly to confirm the rumor.
During the next D9 conference, the CEO appeared and informed the public that Twitter will use a more enhanced photo-sharing service as well as a completely revamped version of search. According to the CEO, the social networking site through a partnership with Photobucket ( that handles more than 8 billion photos) will create a retooled photo-sharing service that permits users to upload images and attach them to their tweets. However, this service doesn't include video upload. For Hashtags, the application will also focus more on images. When users search a particular Hashtag, users are presented with huge catalogue of photos.
The CEO added that Twitter plans to utilize cellular carriers to enable people to tweet photos using a phone's picture-messaging system. This new photo feature matches with changes to Twitter's search function that will also display popular photos and videos from websites like Youtube and Vimeo.
During the conference, Costolo was asked to give comment on the impression that the native photo-sharing service was turning into Facebook. Costolo explained that photo-sharing is different in Twitter. He said Facebook is more of an archive of past moments. CNN quoted the CEO: "We just need to remove the friction from adding photos into Twitter." He added "developers say they feel uneasy about Twitter acquiring makers of related software, such as TweetDeck, and then threatening to change the rules so as to potentially lock out certain types of apps…All we can do is be straightforward about where we're headed."
Costolo suggested that software makers displaced by Twitter's new photo service should focus on other businesses. He pointed at Yfrog which he described "an amazing hosting business."
He also made clear that Twitpic, popular image-hosting website, will not try to claim ownership of images uploaded by users.
He asserted Twitter is about sharing pictures as they happen and will not let users arrange images into photo albums.
